Case Study: Tanzania
Tanzania is the latest region selected for the Smiles & Hopes campaign.
Our Smiles & Hopes Ambassador to Tanzania is Prue Preston, a UK-based dental nurse. She recently returned from her second annual trip to Tanzania, where she visited care homes for orphaned and abandoned children. Through Prue’s documented experiences and interaction with aid workers on the ground we have already begun channelling funds to approved NGO’s, and have identified and outlined key areas of future project development nationwide.
Whilst in Tanzania, Prue administered staff-training and dental awareness to orphanage staff, and documented problem areas that we need to target our fundraising efforts towards.
Spotlight on Tanzania
1. Little to no domestic funding available for health-care provision in orphanages.
2. High occurrence rate of HIV and Malaria
3. Dental hygiene and maintenance often by necessity overlooked in wake of more life-threatening conditions.
Ambassadors like Prue serve as our eyes on the ground identifying regional obstacles we can make the best possible use of the funding we generate.
"There is a great need for dental and medical aid for children in Tanzania. Poverty is widespread and many children lose their parents to AIDS. The orphanages have little funding and often cannot provide the bare necessities. It is vitally important that we do what we can to help.”
